In 1945, at the end of the war, my family received a telegram which said:
PARENTS AND MARGUERITES LOST ARE ALONE. HELP.
LILY PROHASZKA.
We searched through the International Red Cross, HIAS, and multiple refugee relief organizations, but never found her. Many years later I began a memoir/novel, giving Lily the life she never had.
With the internet opening the world to information flow, I renewed the search a few years ago, contacting a Hungarian JewishGenealogist through Jewish Gen, Hungarian Special Interest Group. Mel and I traveled to Hungary in August 2018, and began another search. We found my family’s records in the archives in Sarkad, found the grave of my great grandfather Marton Klein in the old Jewish cemetery in Sarkad, but found no trace of Lily.
After our return, I asked genealogist Karesz Vandor, to continue the search. In October, he located a woman he thought to be Lily’s daughter. I wrote to her and in November received a long email from Marianna Gajda, Lily’s granddaughter. She lived, survived the war, had a life.
